Understanding Domains
The first thing you’re going to have to consider when building a website is getting a domain. But what exactly is a domain?
You can think of it as a business name. When someone asks you, “What’s your business called?” you’d say something like, “The Best Cake Decorator.”
It’s the same thing with domain names. It’s the name of your website. So, when someone asks you, “Hey, what’s your website?”, you’d say something like, “bestcakedecorator.com”
Domain vs URL
Now don’t confuse a domain from a URL. A URL is the actual address of a web page. A website usually has multiple pages, like About or Contact pages. To visit a page, you simply type its URL into your browser. For instance, to reach the About page, you enter “example.com/about.”
As the website owner, you get to pick the URL for each page. For example, you could use “bestcakedecorator.com/about” for your Contact page. However, that’s really stupid. So, make sure your URL matches the page’s content, or your visitors might get annoyed.
